What is a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment may be necessary when the soft inner layer of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected. This can occur as a result of a weakened tooth, deep dental caries (cavities), repeated dental procedures or a dental injury that allows for infection to access the inside layer of the tooth. To prevent infection, dental pain or loss of the affected tooth, it is highly advised to seek the help of a dentist or endodontist when a root canal is required.

How to Notice Early Signs of a Root Canal

The best way to prevent a root canal is to maintain a good dental hygiene routine by brushing and flossing daily and coming in every six months for a regular checkup. If you have noticed any changes in your dental health such as a sensitive tooth that is agitated by hot or cold foods, or gums that itch or bleed after brushing, it is recommended to come in for a dental exam. At Honest Teeth, we practice preventive and conservative dental care to support your teeth no matter what life brings your way.

Your Appointment for Root Canal Therapy

Endodontic dentistry focuses on treating disease or damage that has affected the pulp of the tooth. At your appointment for root canal treatment, Dr. Meinerz will carefully numb the tooth to create a pain-free treatment process. Next, a small hole is made into the surface layer of the tooth to extract the infected pulp and remove the source of pain. The root canal is then cleaned and filled with a rubber-like material known as gutta-percha to support the natural structure of the tooth. Finally, a dental filling or crown is used to protect the tooth with a proper sealant.
