If you’ve recently been approved for dental implants from Dr. Max Meinerz or Dr. Kyle Krueger at Honest Teeth, you may be wondering what to expect from the surgical implant placement procedure. So in this guide, we’ll take you through the basics; from preparing for your appointment to the surgery itself, and steps you will need to take while recovering from surgery. Let’s get started.

Preparing For Your Implant Surgery

Here are a few steps you should take before you get implants at Honest Teeth.

  • Clear your schedule for a few days after your appointment – You should avoid work and social engagements for at least 1-3 days after your appointment. During this time, you should rest, relax, and take things easy, so plan accordingly.

  • Shop for soft foods – Pudding, applesauce, smoothies, and other soft foods are ideal after surgery. You may need to eat mostly soft foods for 1-2 weeks after your appointment, so start planning a grocery list.

  • Dress comfortably – Loose, breathable clothing will keep you comfortable throughout your surgery

  • Fast if you’re told to – You may need to avoid eating and drinking for up to 8-12 hours before surgery to ensure that you can be sedated properly at our office.

What To Expect From Implant Placement Procedure

First, Dr. Meinerz or Dr. Krueger will clean your mouth and numb the treatment area. You’ll likely be sedated by this time, so you may not remember much of what happens after this point.

Then, Dr. Krueger or Dr. Meinerz will create an opening in your gum tissue and jaw bone, based on the surgical plan they made after your initial consultation. Once this opening has been prepared, a small screw-shaped dental implant will be placed in the opening, and it will be secured into place.

After this, the area will be cleaned and the gum will be sutured shut to promote proper healing of your implant. This process will be repeated if you’re getting multiple implants.

Recovering From Your Implant Surgery

Dr. Krueger and Dr. Meinerz will provide you with a set of comprehensive instructions to follow as you heal from your implant. You will need to follow them to the letter to make sure your implant heals properly.

Typically, you’ll need to take steps like eating mostly soft foods, avoiding direct brushing of the implant site for 2-3 days, and avoiding heavy exercise and exertion for a few days. You may get a prescription for painkillers, which you should take as prescribed.

The pain and discomfort of an implant usually peaks after about 2-3 days. Other symptoms like swelling and bruising should also begin to fade at this time. Depending on your case, it may take between 1-2 weeks to fully heal.

However, it takes 3-6 months or longer for your implant to permanently bond with your jaw. You will need to come and see the team at Honest Teeth for a few follow-ups throughout this time, so that we can ensure your mouth is healing properly.
